Easy Recipe For Homemade Pickled Onions

Homemade pickled onions are really easy to make...

One of the easiest of pickled vegetables to make is pickled onions, and they are perhaps the most famous pickle of all.

Have you ever seen a buffet at a party without pickled onion of some sort? I doubt it, the pickled onion is truly versatile and can accompany most things from a ploughman's lunch to fish and chips! And the small, delicate silverskin onions are even at home at a cocktail party! 

Pickled Onions are really easy to make and you can change the flavour combinations to suit your taste.

Below you will find a basic recipe for perfect pickled onions and some ideas for you to experiment with different ways to pickle onions.

Basic Recipe For Pickled Onions (makes about 2x500g jars)

Ingredients

  • 500g peeled pickling onions
  • 1 tablespoon soft brown sugar (optional)
  • Malt vinegar or pickling vinegar to cover. (Pickling vinegar often comes in large jars that you can use to store the onions in)

Basic method for pickling onions

  • The pickled onions will retain their crunch longer if they are soaked in well salted water for 2 to 3 hours prior to pickling.
  • Once soaked simply place the onions in sterilised jars, add the sugar and cover with the vinegar. 
  • Store the onions in a cool dark place for 4 weeks until they are ready to eat. 
  • The pickled onions should keep for up to a year.

Hot Chilli Spiced Pickled Onions

I call these spicy little gems 'blow your brains out pickled onions'!

You have to be a lover of chillies to attempt this one :-) The quantities are vague… it depends how brave you are!

Use the same basic recipe for pickling onions but as you are putting the onions in the jar mix in some whole chillies split lengthways, garlic cloves, peppercorns, dried red chillies, coriander seeds and fresh sliced ginger.

Sit back and wait for 4 weeks!

Pickled Onions With Herbs

Rosemary, sage and thyme flavour this pickled onion recipe...

Layer with, pieces of fresh rosemary, thyme, sage and mixed peppercorns
You can pretty much add whatever herbs and spices take your fancy.

Remember you can also experiment by using different vinegars such as cider vinegar, white wine vinegar, distilled white malt vinegar or red wine vinegar.
